Organize Garden Tools – Easy, Simple Storage Idea
Tools are actually the life of a garden and must be given their due place. I must confess, I have been a slob when there’s a need to organize garden tools. While I’m a meticulous planner w.r.t. what plant goes where, how must pots be arranged, keeping everything clean and non-messy, my garden tools were usually just kept in different pots or a big unsightly container.
It’s not that I have never tried to do so, but every time either the arrangement was short-lived or not practical.. Quite a surprise, because the solution was in-fact pretty simple!!
So, I set out today to tackle this seemingly boring but extremely simple task in the garden to clean & organize my tools, like a boss!!
CLEANING GARDEN TOOLS
That’s how I do it. Nothing professional about it!
- Collect all tools in a big shallow tub.
- Soak in water. Keep the wooden handles out of it, as much as possible.
- Add some liquid soap/dish soap/washing powder or any cleaning agent of your choice.
- Add some baking soda for extra sparkle.
- Let them soak for about 10 minutes.
- Start scrubbing and wash under clean water.
- Let dry over a newspaper.
- Rub some coconut oil over dried tools, even the wooden parts. Because your tools work hard and deserve a spa.
(FUN FACT: We read news online, just like most of our generation. There was an amazing offer on newspaper subscription so we went for it. The newspaper comes in very handy for all purposes gardening 😛 )
NOW, comes the FUN PART!!
MY IDEA OF ORGANIZING GARDEN TOOLS
a) So I took some twist wire, easily available at gardening supplies store.
*Any sort of thread or ribbon will solve the purpose. I took it because I have it and let’s admit, the thin green looks cute and neat.
b) Make a loop to hang the tools.
c) Call the carpenter/electrician/anyone with a drill about 37 times to come and hang this hook strip in the garden.
This is the strip used to hang clothes in washrooms behind the doors 😛 You may use any kind of fancy hooks you like.
d) Hang the tools!! Viola!!
Bet you couldn’t have thought of this genius idea!! Haha!
e) For the smaller tools, I made a loop through this small white mesh container(originally a pen-stand) and hung it on the hook as well.
BTW, I am contemplating getting one more to split the tools. They are stuffed at the moment.
I had previously used the hooks to hold small buckets with tools but that arrangement had 2 issues. Water collected at the bottom making it all murky and it was a hiding spot for lizards among the tools. So basically I have grabbed a tool approximately twice to be surprised by a jumping lizard. So, No, Thank You.
This way I can also wash them every day when I water the plants and no more diggin’ around (literally) for the tools!
