Banana peels are a boon for the garden! There are so many versatile ways to use this cheap ingredient to increase flowering & boost the health of your plants. From homemade liquid fertilizer, a plant spray to enriching soil, a banana peel can be it all! Let’s explore the benefits & uses.
BANANA PEEL USES – LIQUID FERTILIZER
Combine a banana peel with one egg & some coffee powder. This is an instant booster shake to increase flowering in the garden, specially for roses. DETAILS HERE.
BANANA PEEL USES – PLANT SPRAY
This is an excellent homemade fertilizer for flowering plants that takes only one ingredient to make.
- Take a large jar of water & immerse one peel into it completely.
- Cover the jar with a mesh lid or a hanky. Make sure it is not airtight.
- Keep checking the water level as any exposed part of the peel will rot.
- After 3 days, the water will appear muddy.
- Filter the liquid.
- Dilute it with equal quantity of water.
- Pour in a spray bottle & spray over plants.
- The leftover peel can be composted.
- One banana peel is enough to soak in about 1 liter of water.
BANANA PEEL USES – SOIL AMENDMENT
- Let a banana peel dry out a bit.
- Chop it into small pieces using scissors.
- Till the soil in a pot or ground.
- Add the chopped peel & mix it.
- It will decompose to provide nutrition & boost flowering.
- Do this with all pots in rotation every day.
BANANA PEEL USES – COMPOST
- Simply bury banana peels into a corner of your garden or in a big pot.
- Add to the compost pile.
- Layer banana peels & eggshells in an empty pot & cover with soil. Let it decompose for a month or so then plant the pot.
