When i first started gardening, i was awe-struck by geraniums, in particular. I still don’t know if it is about the scented beautiful leaves or the bunches of florets but my love for geraniums stands rock solid! What i didn’t know back then was that it is extremely easy to grow Geraniums from seeds. Yes, as a beginner, geraniums looked too exotic to me to be grown from seed but as they say, experience matters! All you need is a packet of seeds from a reliable source. Let’s figure out WHY and HOW to

GROW GERANIUMS FROM SEEDS

STEP 1. Get some good soil in a pot/tray. CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS.

STEP 2. Sow seeds thinly scattered. Don’t over-crowd.

STEP 3. Cover with some compost or vermiculite. SEE HERE – A DETAILED SEED SOWING GUIDE

STEP 4. Keep in partial shade.

STEP 5. Keep it damp (not wet). You will see sprouts in about 3-4 days with good quality geranium seeds.

STEP 6. Let the seedlings develop at-least 2 sets of true leaves before transplanting. Enjoy your geraniums grown from seed!!

Ok.. this might not be a big deal but it is definitely thrilling to grow geraniums from seeds!! If you are wondering WHY.. here’s…

1. Where i live, nurserymen make a weird questioning face when an over-enthusiastic girl asks them if geraniums have arrived for the season.. “GER-what!!??” is what i hear for a reply.. *sigh* No.. people don’t buy any annuals here that cost over Rs.30 and are not recognized by their old malis(gardeners)

2. Prices are now sky-high and what used to cost Rs.40 about 3 years ago is now selling at Rs.150!! Really!! It’s almost maddening.. so..

3. Color selection! Each new bud holds a surprise and I’ve always had a rainbow of colors growing geraniums from seed.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Buy packets of geraniums seeds online and sow them in your garden and be satisfied that you don’t have to roam around and across nurseries in every town you visit and hunt for colors in geraniums and lug them back to your garden with a questioning husband who doesn’t know where to fit in all the bags and the pots and plants and what-not! *why did i not think of it sooner*
